The word “leopard” was transformed from two Greek words which mean “lion cat”. This big cat has been the king of the mountains for thousands of years, while in southern Siberia, the snow leopard is widely recognized as a clan and community protector. They usually coexist peacefully with lions. The snow leopard is the highest animal in the food chain and the spiritual form of the snow leopard has been identified as a unifier of the ecosystem. It has been listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List (International Union for the Conservation of Nature of Threatened Species) since 1986, and only until recent years (September 14, 2017) reclassified to vulnerable, i.e. the number of mature individuals is lower than 10 thousand and the decline is at least 10% over three generations.
